The Mental Health Problem
America is in a mental health crisis and our current solutions are struggling to meet our needs.
People Affected:
117 Million suffer with symptoms of Depression or Anxiety, millions more from PTSD, OCD and other conditions.
Prescription Medication:
30% do not get any relief from pharmaceutical treatment. For the patients that do take pharmaceuticals, 68% experience side effects and 70% suffer withdrawal symptoms when trying to get off their prescription.
Talk Therapy:
Can be effective but it can take a long time. It can often take several years to see meaningful improvement.
On Your Own:
Lifestyle changes like diet, exercise, sleep, and social support can make a big difference, but can be hard to achieve when you’re not feeling well.
Related Issues:
Mental health concerns seldom occur on their own. There are other factors like pain, hormonal issues, and digestive problems that are part of the bigger picture.
So if antidepressants, talk therapy and other conventional approaches haven't worked well enough, you're not alone.
Why holistic care?
The Comprehensive Solution:
Mental health is complicated - it involves the mind, the brain and the body. That’s why we developed Psychedelic-based holistic care.
We combine the psychedelic properties of ketamine to transform the brain with a comprehensive personalized approach to mental and physical health.
Here’s an example:
If a client with depression also has chronic headaches, she’s going to have a hard time sleeping. Her insomnia is going to make her depression symptoms worse, which are only going to further impact her headaches. This situation makes it nearly impossible to motivate to take exercise or deal with past traumas. It’s a vicious cycle that needs to be addressed at all levels: the brain, the body and the mind.
At Caire we have expertise in all of the elements that come together to make meaningful change.
Therapy:
Our team is experienced in therapy that uses tools from analytic, cognitive, existential approaches, with specific training in psychedelic therapy.
Lifestyle Medicine:
We use lifestyle medicine, managing diet, exercise and stress as just three of multiple critical factors in improving mental health. Many clients already know the basics, but our skill is in helping you successfully implement strategies and make them stick.
Related Issues:
The body plays an equally important role, and without considering chronic pain, like headaches, hormonal issues like PCOS and diabetes, or autoimmune and inflammatory conditions like thyroid or IBS, we couldn’t treat the whole person.
Chasing symptoms can sometimes feel like trying to silence a fire alarm instead of putting out the fire. We help you get to the root of your problem, whether it be bio, psycho, social, or some combination and bring it together under one roof, in one personalized program just for you.
Why Ketamine?
We know that psychedelic therapy can be the magic bullet that can change patients’ lives. We believe it is the future of mental health because it both changes the brain on its own, but more importantly opens the mind for all of the other treatments necessary for true change.
Safe:
Ketamine has been used as an FDA approved anesthetic since 1970. This makes it both incredibly well tested and the only federally legal psychedelic medicine so far. It’s safe, fast and effective in setting up your brain to make changes in your thoughts, habits and even how your brain interprets, experiences and reacts to pain, stress and sadness.
Effective:
Although originally created as an anesthetic, since its discovery it has also been researched as a mental health medicine. This research has only increased in the last twenty years with new peer-reviewed studies showing ketamine to be over 80% effective in treating depression.
Rapid:
Perhaps the most incredible thing about ketamine is how fast it works. In as little as two hours after a treatment, scans have shown neurons growing. This growth is a physical sign of improving mental functioning. Meanwhile, traditional psychiatric medications can take months to take effect. We describe in more detail how ketamine works on the brain, below.
What does it feel like?
“Like a Vacation”:
Before your treatment we make sure you’re comfortable - a cozy blanket, an eye mask if you like, and we pick a custom playlist that serves as a guide during the session. The experience itself feels like a vacation. Or what a vacation should be - calm, comfortable, a healthy distance away from your nagging everyday worries, a place where you can explore and learn something new about yourself.
Comfortable:
The physical sensations can feel warm, relaxed, and buoyant or floating. If a patient is experiencing pain or tension, that goes away. Some clients describe feeling like they are in a pleasant dream, but are still present and awake. Dreams are unique for all of us, so the specifics can vary, but experiences of traveling to magical places are not uncommon.
Insightful:
Many different feelings may come up during a session. They tend to be a combination of insightful and warm. Feelings of inspiration, new perspectives and life meaning come up. Likewise, feelings of happiness, connection, gratitude and love are common.
For some this is mostly an internal experience, and for others, they prefer to talk it out with their guide during the session. We take notes, so you won’t forget any insights that come up, and we will review them with you later. These notes can work as great tools outside of the clinic for weeks and even months after your visit. Typical sessions last about an hour to an hour and half and leave clients feeling calm and happy the rest of the day.
How is it administered?
-
We administer the ketamine either by IV or an intramuscular injection based on what we determine will be best for your needs. This approach lets us make adjustments to your treatment in a very precise and personalized way, optimizing the outcomes of your sessions.
-
We all know that some people don’t love needles so it’s worth saying that our team has given thousands of injections over our careers and are experts at it, honestly you won’t feel a thing - we promise.
-
More importantly, you will be supported the whole time you are with us, a nurse, therapist, or guide will always be by your side. There is no substitute for having an in person, experienced and caring professional helping guide your sessions.
How Ketamine Works?
“When our brains are more connected, we feel more connected!”
-
Ketamine changes the structure and the function of the brain for the better.
Structurally; trauma, stress, anxiety and depression decrease the connections between neurons in the brain. Ketamine does the opposite by increasing neuronal growth, called synaptogenesis. Like a tree growing a more vast, connected and healthy root system, the same thing happens for neurons in the brain.
The result is an improved mood, more calm, and feeling happier.
-
Functionally, ketamine stimulates certain receptor sites in the brain, particularly the NMDA receptors.
This results in increased neuroplasticity - a brain state that increases our ability to think more broadly, accept new insights, and change our perspectives, habits and feelings.
This lays the groundwork for increasing the effectiveness of therapy and our ability to deal with our trauma and struggles, and disconnect from old patterns of thinking, while finding meaning, purpose and compassion for ourselves and those around us.
